A short history of W14

From the High Middle Ages the hamlet of North End was mostly farmland and market gardens. In 1792 Brandenburg House at Fulham was bought by the Margravine of Brandenburg-Ansbach and later housed Caroline of Brunswick from 1820 to 1822 before its demolition. From 1824 part of Counter's Creek became the Kensington Canal, which failed and gave way to a railway. Barons Court station opened in 1874 on land linked to Sir William Palliser. In 1876 the builders William Henry Gibbs and John P. Flew began 1,200 houses and the unsold ones led to North End being renamed West Kensington. Olympia was built on a former market garden and its Grand Hall and Pillar Hall were finished in 1885. Bombing in the Second World War damaged the area and the West Cromwell Road bridge opened in 1942. In 1975 the police officer Stephen Tibble was shot dead near Barons Court. There are 172 listed buildings nearby including the Grade I Debenham House and The Tower House.
