A short history of SW5

Earl's Court was farmland and orchards within the ancient manor of Kensington, held by the Saxon Edwin before the Norman conquest. The Domesday Book of 1086 records Aubrey de Vere I holding the manor from Geoffrey de Montbray, bishop of Coutances. The de Vere family, Earls of Oxford, probably gave the manor house its name. By 1104 a church stood there. In the early 1600s a marriage brought the manor to the family of Sir William Cope before it passed to Henry Rich, created Earl of Holland in 1624. The surgeon John Hunter made a home and menagerie on the manor house site in 1765. Brompton Cemetery opened in 1840. Building began at Nevern Square in 1880. The manor house was demolished in 1886 and the pleasure grounds opened in 1887. The area has 311 listed buildings, two of them Grade I: the Natural History Museum front lodge and gates and the Church of St Cuthbert and St Matthias.
