A short history of SW10
West Brompton sits beside Counter's Creek, which probably formed the eastern limit of the Fulham Manor lands from the Saxon period. Chelsea draws its name from an Old English phrase for a riverside wharf for chalk or limestone and a synod met there in 787. Before the Domesday Book Thurstan, governor of the royal palace under Edward the Confessor, gave the manor to the Abbot and Convent of Westminster. Domesday Book in 1086 listed Chelsea within the Ossulstone hundred of Middlesex, with Edward of Salisbury as its principal tenant. Henry VIII acquired the manor in 1536 and Charles II founded the Royal Hospital Chelsea in 1682, which opened in 1694. Brompton Cemetery was laid out between 1837 and 1839 and the Royal Marsden cancer hospital was built in 1859. The district has 321 listed buildings, including three at Grade I: Chelsea Old Church, the Church of St Mary and the Church of St Luke.
