A short history of W11
The name Notting Hill appears as Knottynghull in 1356 and is now thought likely to come from a Saxon personal name, Cnotta, joined to a term for a settlement. The area was a rural hamlet until the 19th century, when brickmaking and tilemaking began around Pottery Lane and pig farmers settled nearby. From the 1820s James Weller Ladbroke began the Ladbroke Estate with the architect Thomas Allason, whose 1823 plan introduced large communal gardens behind the terraces. Ladbroke Grove was built from the 1830s and reached Harrow Road by the 1870s. The Hippodrome racecourse opened in 1837 and closed in 1841 and crescents were later built over its tracks. St John's church followed in 1845. Avondale Park was laid out in 1892 on a site once used for pig waste. Race riots took place in 1958. Two of the 172 listed buildings are Grade I, the Church of St John the Baptist and Cosmic House.
