A short history of UB9

Late Mesolithic artefacts have been found near Dewes Farm in Harefield. Denham takes its name from Old English words meaning a homestead in a valley and the Domesday survey of 1086 recorded it as Deneham. Harefield appears in the same survey as Herefelle. Countess Goda held its manor before the Conquest and Richard FitzGilbert afterwards. The entry lists land for five ploughs, meadow for one, woodland for 1,200 pigs, ten villeins, seven bordars, three cottars and a priest. The Newdigate family owned Harefield by 1446 and Sir Thomas Egerton entertained Queen Elizabeth in 1602. Tile House was built in 1800. In the First World War Harefield Park was an Australian military hospital and Higher Denham had an army camp. Denham Garden Village was built in the 1950s. Church of St Mary, Savay Farm and Denham Place are Grade I listed.
