A short history of KT4
Cuddington appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Codintone, with 5 hides, one mill worth 3 shillings and nine ploughs. It rendered £9 12s and had 28 households. In 1538 Henry VIII bought the manor from Richard Codington and cleared the village to make way for Nonsuch Palace and its parks. Worcester Park takes its name from Edward Somerset, 4th Earl of Worcester, who was given charge of Nonsuch's Great Park in 1606. In 1750 William Taylor acquired Worcester Park and used a mill on the Hogsmill River for making gunpowder. Production was recorded as late as 1854, the year the mill exploded. The area stayed largely rural until the railway station opened, with most housing built in the 1920s and 1930s and the south developed in the 1960s after the brickworks closed. Five Grade II listed buildings stand nearby.
