A short history of Ruthin
Settlements from Celtic and later Roman times are evidenced in the area. St Meugan's Church at Llanrhydd seems to have been a place of worship from the 6th century and was first documented in 1254. The name comes from Welsh words for red and fort, after the sandstone of the castle that Dafydd began in 1277. Reginald de Grey received the surrounding district and his family ran it for 226 years. John Grey founded St Peter's Church in 1310. A land dispute between Reginald Grey and Owain Glyndŵr led to a rebellion that Glyndŵr started by burning the town on 16 September 1400. The castle withstood a siege of eleven weeks in the Civil War and Parliament then ordered it pulled down. It was rebuilt in the 1800s. Of 186 listed buildings within 0.6 miles of the centre, Ruthin Castle, Nantclwyd House and St Peter's are Grade I.
