A short history of Denbigh
Denbigh, called Dinbych in Welsh and meaning "Little Fortress", lay in the cantref of Rhufoniog, which was mostly under Gwynedd but sometimes under English control in the 12th and 13th centuries. Edward I began Denbigh Castle and the town walls in 1282. Rebels under Madog ap Llywelyn took the castle in 1294 and Edward retook the town that December. Owain Glyndŵr's revolt saw it burnt in 1400. The Wars of the Roses left the walled town largely destroyed so settlement moved north-east of the walls around High Street. Denbigh became county town in 1536 and County Hall was built in 1572. Robert Dudley planned a cathedral in 1579 but Leicester's Church was left unfinished. Royalists held the town from 1643 until 1646. There are 183 listed buildings including six Grade I such as the castle and Burgess Gate.

Denbigh Leisure Centre is the main indoor sports facility in the town and Alastair McNab Tennis Courts provide tennis.
