A short history of Mold

Tradition places the Alleluia Victory of Germanus of Auxerre at Maes Garmon, a mile west of the town, in AD 430. Mold grew around a motte and bailey castle built by the Norman Robert de Montalt around 1140. The name comes from the Norman-French for high hill and is recorded as Mohald in 1254. Welsh princes and Anglo-Norman lords held the castle in turn. The Welsh name Yr Wyddgrug, meaning mound of the tomb, appears as Gythe Gruc in 1280 to 1281. The castle declined after 1329. A fair in 1465 led to a pitched battle. In 1833 workmen uncovering a Bronze Age mound found a golden cape and the county hall was established that year. A colliery riot followed in 1869. Mold has 49 listed buildings including the Grade I Parish Church in St Mary.
