The manor is first mentioned in 1289, held under the Earl of Chester by the Poutrells and later the de Stockeports. The Warren family held it from 1382 until 1801. In the late 18th century the Pickford waggoning business was based at The Birches Farm until moving to London in 1823. The estate passed to the Vernons in 1826 and they held it until its sale in 1920. The Macclesfield Canal was completed in 1831 and Lord Vernon began managing the mines himself in 1832. Railways opened in 1845 and 1869. From the 1870s private house building made Poynton a commuter town for Manchester. The collieries closed on 30 August 1935 with 250 men made redundant.
