A short history of Hazel Grove

Norbury appears in the Domesday Survey of 1086 as Nordberie. Little development took place in the Hazel Grove area before the 16th century and it straddled the townships of Bosden, Bramhall, Norbury and Torkington. A blacksmith named Richard Bullock built a smithy in 1560 beside the main road to Buxton and London and a village called Bullock Smithy grew along that route. Norbury Chapel had been built by the early 17th century. A map of 1749 shows the alternative name as 'Hessel-grave'. John Wesley preached in the village in 1788. The church of St Thomas was completed in 1834 and villagers resolved in 1836 to adopt Hazel Grove formally. A Mechanics' Institute followed in 1871. Seven Grade II listed buildings stand near the centre, including the Church of St Thomas and a thatched cottage.
