A short history of Cheadle Hulme
Bronze Age, Roman and Anglo-Saxon finds show early activity locally, including a cross linked to St Chad uncovered in 1873. The Domesday Book of 1086 records the area as Cedde, a single large estate shared with Cheadle, valued at £20 and including woodland three leagues in length. Gamel, a free Saxon, held it under Hugh d'Avranches, Earl of Chester. The de Chedle family later owned it. The estates were brought together again in 1476 after the last Vernon died. The manor was confiscated in 1643 and then passed to the Moseley family, so the area became known as Cheadle Moseley. It grew from several hamlets rather than around a church. Civil parish status came to Cheadle Moseley in 1868 and by 1894 it formed part of the Cheadle and Gatley district. Seven listed buildings stand near the centre, all Grade II, including Hulme Hall and the Seven Arches Railway Viaduct.
