A short history of Bramhall
Two freemen named Brun and Hakon each held a separate estate in the Anglo-Saxon manor of Bramall in 1066. In 1070 William the Conqueror brought the north-west of England under control and shared the land among his followers. The manor went to Hamon de Massey, who later became the first Baron of Dunham Massey. He received it as wasteland because the Harrying of the North had devastated it. The Domesday Book records the place as "Bramale", a name formed from the Old English brom for broom and halh for a hidden corner, probably beside water. Broom was native to the area. When that record was compiled, the land was recovering and being farmed again. Ten listed buildings stand within 0.8 miles of the centre. Bramall Hall is Grade I and the other nine are Grade II.
