A short history of Marple

The earliest written form of the name is Merpel, thought to mean a stream at a boundary. People settled the area several thousand years ago, with standing stones and tumuli around Ludworth. The area lay within Macclesfield Forest and was left out of the Domesday Book survey. A land sale deed of 1122 gives the first mention and the Vernon family came into possession of the land in 1220. Residents farmed small holdings or worked in linen weaving and hatting until Samuel Oldknow built lime kilns, mills and workers' terraces after 1790. Benjamin Outram designed Marple Aqueduct, opened in 1800 and seven men died building it. The railway arrived in 1865 and a fire destroyed Oldknow's mill in 1892. From the 1920s the town expanded into a residential suburb of Stockport and it joined Greater Manchester in 1974. All 41 listed buildings near the centre are Grade II.
