A short history of Harrow

The name Harrow comes from an Old English word for a heathen temple, probably on the hill where St Mary's Church now stands. A family named Greenhill lived in the hamlet below the hill from at least 1247 and the place appears as Grenehulle in 1334. Headstone Manor dates from the 14th century. St John's Church was built in 1866 and the railway station of 1880 brought a housebuilding boom. Eastman Kodak opened a large works in Wealdstone in 1890 and a fatal car accident on Grove Hill in 1899 is said to have been Britain's first. The district was renamed Harrow in 1934 and joined Greater London in 1965. Of 250 listed buildings nearby, Headstone Manor, the Parish Church of St Mary and The Old Schools at Harrow School are Grade I.
