A short history of Ealing
Ealing takes its name from the Gillingas, a Saxon tribe named in a charter of Æthelred of Mercia around 700 and themselves named after a chief called Gilla. The Bishop of London was appointing the priest of St Mary's by about 1127 and the name appeared as Yllinges around 1170. A windmill stood on the manor in 1318 and five free tenements were recorded in 1423. A census of 1599 counted 85 households in the village. Great Ealing School was founded in 1698. The church was destroyed in 1729 when its steeple fell. The railway station opened in 1838, shifting the local economy towards market gardening and later suburban building. Ealing gained municipal borough status in 1901 and the school closed in 1908. The area then joined Greater London in 1965.
