A short history of Borehamwood

The wood of Boreham is recorded in 1188, when Pope Clement gave it to the abbey as feeding ground for its pigs. In 1776 an Act of Parliament provided for dividing and enclosing Boreham Wood Common, which lay within Elstree. On 26 February 1909 a new church parish named All Saints, Boreham Wood was formed from the land east of the Midland Railway. From the 1920s film and later television production made the town a major centre. In 1946 the Admiralty began building secret electronic computers in a disused wartime factory there. After the war council housing for displaced Londoners brought a large rise in population. The civil parish became Elstree and Borehamwood in 1982 and the church parishes reunited under that name in 2005. Eight Grade II listed buildings stand within a mile of the centre, including Manor House and Nicoll Farm House.
