A short history of HA1

Harrow Hill was first recorded in 767 as Gumeninga Hergae. The name Harrow comes from an Old English word for a heathen temple that probably stood where St Mary's Church now stands. The village grew around that church in the 11th century. Families called Greenhill are noted from 1247 and the hamlet at the foot of the hill appears as Grenehulle in 1334. Headstone Manor, Grade I listed, dates from the 14th century. A local board district formed in 1850 and St John's Church was built in 1866. Harrow on the Hill station opened in 1880 and a housebuilding boom followed, with the new town centre becoming known simply as Harrow. A fatal car crash on Grove Hill in 1899 is said to have been the first in Britain. Harrow joined Greater London in 1965. Of 62 listed buildings nearby, St Mary's Church and The Old Schools at Harrow School are Grade I.
