A short history of HA9

Wembley lay in the parish of Harrow and its manor was a sub-manor of Harrow held by Kilburn Priory. When the monasteries were dissolved the priory's land there passed to Richard Page. Around 1787 his son of the same name planned to turn the house called Wellers into a country seat. In 1792 he hired Humphry Repton to landscape the farmland and Repton's work gave Wembley Park its name. A gothic tower begun on Barn Hill was never finished. It became known as Page's folly and was later demolished. In 1802 the house appears to have passed to John Gray, a London brandy merchant, who extended it between 1811 and 1814. The Metropolitan Railway cut through the estate in 1880 and later bought Wembley Park under its chairman Sir Edward Watkin, who planned a tower and pleasure gardens there. The gardens opened in May 1894. Seven Grade II listed buildings stand nearby, including Wembley Arena and the Church of St John.
