Enfield Island Village stands on former Royal Small Arms Factory land. The Ministry of Defence decommissioned the site in 1984 and sold it to British Aerospace. The land passed from Essex to the London Borough of Enfield on 1 April 1994 and was sold to Fairview Homes in 1996. Housing was built between 1997 and 2003 on about 100 acres with some original buildings kept. Seven Grade II listed buildings stand nearby including Wright's Almshouses and The White Horse Public House.
