A short history of Hounslow
Early records spell the name Hundeslow, pointing to an Anglo-Saxon phrase for the barrow of a man called Hound. Hounslow Heath has a recorded history from the Norman period. The Holy Trinity Priory, founded in 1211, developed a small village into a market town for travellers. It remained a staging post on the Bath Road after the priory was dissolved in 1539. By 1650 it had 120 houses, many of them inns or alehouses. Cavalry barracks were built in 1793 while gibbets stood on the heath until around 1809. The last stagecoach passed in 1847 as railways took trade. The Hounslow Loop Line of 1850 then prompted new building. Hounslow Heath Aerodrome ran from 1910 to 1920. The Great West Road of the 1920s brought factories and housing. There are 116 listed buildings, with Grade I status for Osterley House, its Stables and the Church of All Hallows.
