Autumn is a time associated with darker evenings and cosy fires, where your home can be a place of relaxation and a retreat from the cold. But while some prepare to settle into the autumn and winter months in their homes, some are preparing to sell – and many aiming to do so fast – ready to move in for Christmas.

So, make life that little bit easier with our guide to selling your home in autumn.

Clean your carpets

Autumn is in full swing, meaning your carpets no longer have to deal with people going to and from the garden. Now is the perfect time to give your carpet a refresh and make them look brand new ready to welcome potential home buyers. Invest in a great carpet shampoo machine or hire a professional to do the job for you.

Ventilate your home

As the cold weather approaches, you may find yourself closing the windows, turning the heating on, and drying your washing inside. While this may seem the most sensible option for the time of year, ventilating your home prior to viewings can make the world of a difference: drying out the damp air and removing any musty or unwanted odours will leave your home feeling fresh and welcoming to any new visitors.

Have autumnal kerb appeal

Your home’s kerbside appeal is what will initially draw in potential buyers. Give your home exterior and autumnal refresh so that your buyers will feel immediately welcomed. First, remove any fallen leaves to declutter, then ensure your windows are free from any grime. For even more effect, inject some autumnal life to your exterior by adding some autumnal displays in your windows, plants or hanging baskets to your doorstep.

Introduce some autumnal interior

Similarly, a new season is a great opportunity to refresh your home’s interior. Once a viewer has an interest in the exterior, it is time to boost the potential inside the home. Do so by introducing warmer, more autumnal tones, thicker fabrics, and warm accessories such as throws and cushions; all of which give your home a sense of life and transform any cold and empty space into a cosy, appealing one.

Book early viewings

Natural lighting is the most effective way to display your home, but with the autumn evenings drawing in and bringing the darkness with it, it could be beneficial to book your viewings earlier, during daylight hours, to show your home off to its full potential.

However, we understand this may be difficult to fit around some schedules, so we also advise that you invest in new lighting, if necessary, to ensure your home can be shown off in the best possible way.
