A short history of Ystrad Mynach

The name joins the Welsh words for a wide flat valley floor and a monk, yet nothing shows that monks settled here. Older records give the second part as manach, which may have named a tributary of the Rhymney River or may mean a place on a marshy floodplain. The valley was rural and farmed before coal mining arrived. A station existed by 1857 under the name Ystrad Junction. Houses at Tredomen were built for workers at Tredomen Works, which has since been demolished. Glamorgan Constabulary (South Wales Police from 1968) kept its F division headquarters here from 1927 to 1996. The town flooded from time to time until defences were built on the river in the 1960s. Penallta Colliery was the last mine to close in the valley. Of 13 listed buildings near the centre, six are Grade II*: Hengoed Viaduct, The Woollen Mill and four Penallta Colliery structures, namely the Engine Hall and Fan House, the Baths Building and the two headframes.
