A short history of Blackwood

Penllwyn House on the outskirts, once part of the Lord Tredegar Estates, is believed to be where the family of Henry Morgan first lived. He was a privateer and Governor of Jamaica who lived from about 1635 to 1688. In the early 19th century the colliery owner John Hodder Moggridge established Blackwood, building its first houses as a model village. Harsh working conditions made the town a centre of Chartism in the 1830s. The leaders John Frost, Zephaniah Williams and William Jones met at the Coach and Horses, demolished in 1958. The leaders of the march on Newport were sentenced to death, later changed to deportation to Tasmania. In 1912 Artie Moore of Gelligroes picked up the Titanic's distress signals. Coal mining declined in the later twentieth century. Three listed buildings stand near the centre, the highest graded being Blackwood Miners Welfare Institute at Grade II*.
