A short history of Pontllanfraith

The name Pontllanfraith began as a Welsh combination of words for bridge, lake and speckled, probably describing sunlight on a pool in the Sirhowy River. Gelligroes Mill dates from the 17th century and is listed Grade II*. Penllwyn, a former manor house on the Tredegar Estate now the Penllwyn Arms, also holds that grade and is believed to be where the relatives of the pirate Henry Morgan originally lived. Around the eighteenth century llyn gave way to llan, meaning church, which led to a belief in a saint called Braith. Gelligroes Colliery was established in 1874 and 1875 but was abandoned because of water problems. In 1912 Artie Moore received the Titanic's distress signal at the mill. Work at the colliery restarted in 1914 but it was abandoned in 1915 and finally in 1918. The village housed miners during the early to mid 20th century. Eleven listed buildings and one scheduled monument survive nearby.
