A short history of Newbridge

In medieval times the land now forming Abercarn, Cwmcarn and Newbridge was known as Abercarne, a manorial title dating from Norman times. The three townships also lay within the ancient parish of Mynyddislwyn. In the late 18th century a new bridge over the Ebbw River gave Newbridge its English name and the Welsh name Trecelyn means a town of holly trees. At that time the area was a mainly Welsh farming community with few people, rural farms and sheep pasture. Activity and trade followed mountain tracks over Mynyddislwyn and Mynydd Maen with the more prosperous farms beside them, including Hyfod Fach, Glanshon and Cillonydd. Newbridge lies within the historic boundaries of Monmouthshire. Five listed buildings stand near the centre, four at Grade II and one at Grade II*, the Catholic Church of Our Lady of Peace with its attached presbytery.
