A short history of Weybridge

Weybridge is recorded in the 7th century as Waigebrugge and Weibrugge, a name meaning a bridge over the River Wey. Domesday Book of 1086 gives it as Webrige and Webruge in three entries. Bishop Odo of Bayeux held the first, with Herfrid of Throwley as lesser tenant, valued at £5 yearly and totalling 16 acres of meadow and woodland for five pigs. Chertsey Abbey held the other two, which added a further 16 acres of meadow, room for four pigs and ploughland for one and a half teams. Neither a church nor a mill appears. In the 1530s Henry VIII built Oatlands Palace and married Catherine Howard there in 1540. The railway station opened in 1838 and the Brooklands circuit followed in 1907. Of 41 listed buildings near the centre, the Church of St Charles Borromeo, the Gateway to Oatlands Park and the Church of St James are Grade II*.
