A short history of Addlestone

The name Addlestone probably refers to the valley of a Saxon called Attel. Between 666 and 675 CE Frithwald, subregulus of Surrey, granted land that made Addlestone the western part of Chertsey Beomond Manor, which Chertsey Abbey held until the monasteries were dissolved. The Crouch Oak is believed to date from the 11th century. The place was recorded as Attelsdene in 1241 and in 1260 Adam de Woburn was resident at Woburn Park. John Speed's map of 1610 shows it as Adleston. In the 1740s Philip Southcote built a house at Woburn Park with an ornamented farm and the house is Grade II listed. All 13 listed buildings near the centre are Grade II. Chertsey Urban District took over local administration in 1894. By 1911 Addlestone was considered more important than Chertsey. A Blériot aircraft factory opened on Station Road in 1917.
