A Celtic settlement stood here before the Romans and Saxons arrived. The Anglo-Saxon name Walton refers to a settlement of Britons. The Domesday Book of 1086 records it as Waletona, held jointly as overlords by Edward de Sarisber and Richard de Tonbrige. The entry lists 6 hides, a church of St Mary, 2 mills, a fishery, 14 ploughs and 40 acres of meadow. It rendered £28. St Mary's keeps some Saxon material within a 12th century structure. In the 17th century John Bradshaw, who presided at the trial of Charles I, lived in the Tudor manor house. The first documented game of baseball was played at Ashley Park in 1749. An Inclosure Act of 1800 enclosed 3,117 acres of the Walton manors. New Zealand troops were treated at Mount Felix House in the First World War. Walton joined Elmbridge in 1974.
