A short history of Chertsey
Chertsey grew around a Benedictine abbey founded in 666 by Eorcenwald, Bishop of London, on land given by Frithwald. Bede mentioned the place around 750 as Cerotaesei, a name thought to join a Latinised Celtic personal name, Cerotus, with an Old English word for an island or well-watered ground. The Danes sacked the abbey and town in the 9th century and King Edgar refounded it in 964. Domesday Book in 1086 records Certesi, held partly by the abbey and partly by Richard Sturmid under it, with 5 hides, 1 mill, 1 forge at the hall, 20 ploughs, meadow and woodland for 50 hogs, rendering £22. Henry I later granted a market charter. A Thames bridge first appeared in the early 15th century. Henry VIII dissolved the abbey in 1536 and took stone for Oatlands Palace. The modern spelling dates from 1559. Of 63 listed buildings near the centre, five are Grade II* including Church of St Peter and Pyrcroft House.
