A short history of West Bromwich
West Bromwich appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Bromwic, a name meaning broom village. A Benedictine priory stood here from the 12th century and the settlement of Broomwich Heath grew around it. Coaches travelling from London to Shrewsbury began halting in the town in 1727, which marked the start of its growth. Charlemont Hall was built in the 1750s. Coal deposits found in the 19th century drove rapid industrial growth, with spring, gun and nail making. Cholera struck in 1831 and the Town Improvement Commissioners were set up in 1854 to tackle drainage. West Bromwich became a county borough in 1888. Council housing began in 1920 on the Tantany Estate. Air raids in the Second World War killed 58 civilians, most on 19 November 1940. Charlemont Hall was demolished in 1948. The town has 47 listed buildings, including two Grade I: Oak House and West Bromwich Manor House.
