A short history of Pheasey

Land on the south side of Barr Beacon was called Barr Lea. In 1559 Simon Veysie bought 162 acres along with a house, a garden and an orchard from John Reddell for £80 and his surname later changed into Pheasey. During the 17th century the Scott family acquired much of Barr Lea and the land became two farms named Pheasey Farm and Park Farm. George Smith became tenant of Pheasey Farm in 1902 and bought it privately in 1921 after an auction was called off. In 1935 he passed the land to the First National Housing Trust, which planned 4,225 houses. Aldridge Urban District Council refused permission but lost on appeal and 68 acres went to the council as open space. Kingsley Wood cut the first sod on 13 July 1937. About 1,700 houses were finished by September 1939. Some unoccupied homes were later taken over for American troops. Park Farm land was released for building in 1955.
