A short history of Aldridge
Aldridge takes its name from Old English words for the alder tree and a farm or village, though another reading describes an outlying farm set among alder trees. The Domesday Book of 1086 records it as Alrewic, valued at 15 shillings with seven households. Robert d'Oilly was the lord and William son of Ansculf the tenant-in-chief. By the 12th century the spellings Alrewich and Allerwych were in use. Farming remained the main occupation until the 19th century, when coal mines, lime kilns, collieries and brickworks made Aldridge an industrial town. Its clay suited blue bricks. Aldridge became an urban district in 1934 and private house building grew from the 1930s. A small airport served military planes in the Second World War. It merged with Brownhills in 1966 and joined the Metropolitan Borough of Walsall in 1974. Twelve listed buildings stand near the centre, including the Church of St Mary the Virgin at Grade II*.
