A short history of Whitwick
A motte and bailey castle was probably raised in the years after the Conquest and the settlement may have grown around it. Whitwick appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Witewic, among the estates King William I granted to Hugh de Grandmesnil. The entry lists land for half a plough and some woodland, valued at two shillings. The name may point to a guardhouse, a white farm, the farm of a man called Hwita or a local outcrop of white sandstone. By 1293 the place had a weekly market and a fair lasting four days. Henry Beaumont received a licence to crenellate the castle in 1320 and the building work may have led Sir John Talbot to attack it. The castle was recorded as ruinous by 1427. In 1846 Joseph Almond Cropper built almshouses on Castle Hill. The Church of St John the Baptist is listed Grade II*, among six listed buildings near the centre.
