A short history of Coalville

Until the early nineteenth century the area was little more than a track called Long Lane, with a handful of buildings including the eighteenth-century Red House. Coal had been dug nearby since medieval times. Deep mining began when William Stenson sank the Long Lane colliery at Whitwick in the 1820s, after a shaft was first sunk at Whitwick in 1824. George Stephenson opened Snibston Colliery in the early 1830s and the Leicester and Swannington Railway reached the settlement in 1833. A newspaper that year reported the intention to name the new colony Coalville. Quarrying, textiles and wagon building grew alongside the pits during the century. In 1898 an underground fire at Whitwick Colliery killed 35 men. Mining ended in the 1980s. Six listed buildings stand near the centre, all Grade II, including the Memorial Clock Tower and the Snibston Colliery locomotive shed and powder magazine. Snibston Colliery is also a scheduled monument.

Sport and leisure

Indoor sport is centred on Hermitage Leisure Centre and Whitwick and Coalville Leisure Centre. Owen Street Sports Ground is the main stadium and Coalville Town Bowling Club provides bowls. Hermitage Football/Hockey Pitch serves both of those sports and several other football pitches are spread across the area. The Golf Centre in Coalville is the local golf course and PureGym is the fitness centre. For open space there are Coalville Park, Phoenix Park, Snibston Country Park, Scotland Playing Fields and Whitwick Football Pitches. A number of children's playgrounds are also found around the town.
