A short history of Bloxwich

Bloxwich goes back to Anglo-Saxon times at the very least, when it seems to have been a small Mercian settlement. Its earlier name, Blochescwic, points to a village belonging to the family of Bloc. The Domesday Book of 1086 records the place as Blockeswich. Later centuries tie it to the manor and town of Walsall, though some 19th-century writers placed it within the ancient manor of Wednesbury, a claim with no conclusive evidence behind it. During the English Civil War Bloxwich was Royalist while Walsall favoured Parliament and arguments over a local tax for the poor during the 17th and 18th centuries deepened the rivalry. Eleven listed buildings stand near the centre, all Grade II, including Christ Church and the Royal Exchange Public House. A scheduled monument, the cross in All Saints churchyard, also survives.
