Hampton began as a Saxon village around the hillock where St Mary's Church stands. Its name may come from Old English words for a river-bend enclosure and a farmstead. The Domesday Book of 1086 records Hamntone with 41 villagers and 4 smallholders on 35 hides, plus meadow and a fishery, valued at 39 pounds. Aelfgar, Earl of Mercia, held it before the Conquest. Walter of Saint-Valéry then received the manor. The Knights of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem gained it in 1237 and Henry VIII acquired it after the Act of Supremacy 1534. Common land was enclosed in 1811 and fields became market gardens. Waterworks building spanned the end of the 1850s and the start of the 1860s. The railway reached the area in 1864 and prompted steady growth. Hampton Hill, first called New Hampton, developed in that railway era.
