Teddington appears as Tudintún in a Saxon charter of 969 and a charter of 971 gave its land to the Abbey of Westminster. The Domesday Book of 1086 has no separate entry for it, as it was included under Hampton. The name is recorded as Tudinton in 1197. Fulwell is mentioned in records from around 1200. Common land became Bushy Park in 1540 and Bushy House was built in 1663. Open fields were inclosed in 1800 and 1818. Teddington Lock was built in 1811 and the railway arrived in 1863. Charles James Freake bought Fulwell Lodge in 1871. The National Physical Laboratory began in Bushy House in 1902. Manuel II, the exiled last King of Portugal, bought Fulwell Lodge in 1910.
