A short history of TW3
Old records spell Hounslow as Hundeslow, from Anglo-Saxon words for the burial mound of a man called or nicknamed Hound. Holy Trinity Priory, founded in 1211, turned a small village into a market town for travellers until its dissolution in 1539. By 1650 the town had 120 houses, many of them inns or alehouses. In 1784 the base line for the Ordnance Survey was measured on Hounslow Heath. The last stagecoach passed through in 1847 and the Hounslow Loop Line of 1850 then brought new building. Lampton, whose name means lamb farm in Old English, stayed a farming hamlet until late in the 19th century. The heath served as an aerodrome from 1910 to 1920 and the Great West Road of the 1920s drew factories and housing. Eight Grade II listed buildings stand near the centre.
