Viking raids weakened it in the late 9th century and a fortified settlement had formed by the 10th century. A castle was built in the 12th century. French, Genoese and Monegasque ships sacked the town in 1338. The Black Death reached England through ships calling there in 1348 and the western walls were finished in 1380. God's House Tower was built in 1417. Of 316 listed buildings 16 are Grade I, including the Wool House and Church of St Michael.
