A short history of Netley
Netley takes its name from Netley Abbey, founded in 1237 on a site chosen because the Cistercians who ran it wanted a place away from towns, which suggests little settlement nearby. The abbey was dissolved in 1536 and its buildings became a Tudor mansion given to Sir William Paulet. Netley Castle followed in 1542 or 1544 as part of the Device Programme to guard the Solent against French invasion, drawing on parts of the abbey no longer in use, including its water source and construction materials. Both buildings were ruined as the 19th century began. William Chamberlayne held the land until 1829 when it passed to his nephew Thomas. Negotiations over development leases then allowed the village to take shape. In 1856 the government bought much of the estate for the Royal Victoria Military Hospital. The village was first listed as Netley Abbey in 1861. Four Grade II listed buildings stand near the centre.

Netley Cliff Sailing Club is a marina for sailing and the area also has a cricket pitch, a skateboard facility and a number of basketball courts. Several children's playgrounds are mapped across the area.
