A short history of Shildon

The name Shildon comes from Old English, read either as a shelf-shaped hill or a shield or refuge or as words for shelf and hill, referring to a limestone escarpment. People were probably in the area during the Mesolithic period, with a small flint tool found at nearby Brusselton as the only possible trace. Hagg's Lane in Brusselton Wood, part of Dere Street, may show Roman activity. Shildon is first recorded in 821, when lands were granted to the church. The Stockton and Darlington Railway had its first station in the town, built in 1825, along with locomotive works. William Booth of the Salvation Army was scheduled to visit on 1 September 1911. Hugh Dalton spoke in the town in 1942. Of 23 listed buildings near the centre, three are Grade II*: Soho House, Soho Engine Shed (originally Kilburns' warehouse) and the locomotive coaling drops.
