A short history of Newton Aycliffe

Aycliffe began as an Anglo-Saxon settlement called Acley, a name built from Old English words for oak and a clearing and it was also known as Yacley. Church synods met there in AD 782 and AD 789. In the Second World War large ammunition factories operated here, worked largely by thousands of women known as the Aycliffe Angels. William Beveridge produced his report in 1942 and chose moorland between Aycliffe and Middridge for a flagship new town, later living in the Pease Way area. The town was established in 1947 under the 1946 New Towns Act and is the oldest new town in northern England. Great Lakes Chemicals kept some wartime factories until 2004 and Hitachi began building trains there in 2015. One Grade II listed building stands near the centre, the School Aycliffe Lane overbridge.
