A short history of Bishop Auckland

Bishop Auckland first appears in records around 1000, when land here passed to the Earl of Northumberland as a reward for protecting the church from the Scots. In about 1020 King Canute gave land here to the Bishop of Durham. A settlement almost certainly stood here far earlier, with evidence of a church at South Church in the seventh century and a Roman fort at nearby Binchester. In 1083 canons expelled from Durham settled locally and founded a collegiate church. Bishop Pudsey set up a manor house around 1183 and Bishop Bek later turned it into a castle. In 1346 the castle grounds were noted as big enough for 16,000 men before the Battle of Neville's Cross. Charles I visited three times, the last in 1647 as a prisoner. Coal mining grew rapidly once railways arrived in the early nineteenth century. Seven listed buildings, all Grade II, lie near the centre.
