A short history of Holbury

The name Holbury apparently means "hollow fortification", though the landscape feature behind it is unclear. The earliest trace of the manor dates to 1312, when Roger Bernerall and Gilbert de Shupton received the king's licence to grant land in Holebury to King's Beaulieu abbey. The abbots kept it until the monastery was dissolved in 1538. Four years later Henry VIII gave it to Robert Whyte as part of an exchange involving a manor and lands in Middlesex. Thomas Pace held it before 1560 and after his death the manor was joined with the Cadlands and Langley estates. In 1641 the estates were leased by Peter Cardonell, a Norman merchant of Caen, from Nicholas Pescod. The combined holding was then divided and the part matching Holbury Farm passed to the Stanley family in 1693. The manor house is a red brick recasing, dating to the 17th or 18th century, of a Tudor mansion and it stands beside a moated site that may mark the earlier monastic buildings.
