A short history of Liverpool
The name draws on Old English words for muddy water and a pool and the earliest record dates from around 1190 as Liuerpul. In 1207 King John issued letters patent founding the borough, probably as a convenient point to send men and provisions across to Ireland for his campaigns. Its first seven streets formed a double cross, among them Castle Street and Dale Street. Liverpool Castle was already standing in 1235 and survived until its demolition in the 1720s. By the mid 16th century the population was around 600. The town saw a brief siege in 1644 during the Civil War. In 1699 it became a parish, the same year the first slave ship on record sailed. The first dock was built in 1715 as trade moved from Chester. In the 19th century Liverpool became a global economic force and gained city status in 1880. Within 3.7 miles of the centre stand 1478 listed buildings, 29 of them Grade I, including St George's Hall and the Town Hall.
