A short history of Aintree
The name Aintree is thought to be Saxon in origin and to refer to a single tree standing alone. It was first recorded in 1226 and appeared as Ayntre in 1292, with the forms Ayntree and Ayntrie in the 16th century. A local legend linked the name to an oak on Bull Bridge Lane, although the name is far older than any such tree. The oak was removed in 2004. The original village centre was a modest strip of buildings close to where School Lane, Bull Bridge Lane and Wango Lane meet. After the Alt Drainage Act 1779 much of the flat and boggy land nearby was reclaimed for farming. From the 19th century the racecourse has staged the Grand National and a motor racing circuit also operated on the site in the 1950s and 1960s. Four Grade II listed buildings stand near the centre, including properties on Mill Square.
