The name comes from Old Norse words for church and village or farm and settlers from Norway arrived by way of Ireland around 900. The Domesday Book of 1086 records the place as Cherchebi with a population of 70. The Molyneux family bought the hundred in 1596, lost it briefly in 1737 and regained it in 1771 when Charles Molyneux became the 1st Earl of Sefton. St Chad's Church was built in the 19th century on the site of the Domesday church. It is the only Grade II* building among 23 listed nearby. ROF Kirkby, a Royal Ordnance Factory, opened in 1939 and was completed in 1941. Liverpool Corporation bought the land from the Earl in 1947 for overspill housing. Work began at Southdene in 1950 and Kirkby became an urban district in 1958 before joining Knowsley in 1974.
