A short history of Heswall
Before the Norman Conquest Heswall was cited as a possible location for Dingesmere, named in Egil's Saga in connection with the Battle of Brunanburh. The Domesday Book of 1086 lists Eswelle, held by Robert de Rodelent, whose lands covered much of the Dee's eastern bank. In 1277 it passed to Patrick de Haselwall, Sheriff of Cheshire. The Lower Village began as a small fishing village and its church tower is about 500 years old. Population was 168 in 1801 and 398 in 1841. Gayton's windmill stopped working in 1860. A thunderstorm destroyed the earlier church on 19 September 1875 and the present one was built in 1879. Railways of 1886 and 1896 let wealthy Liverpool merchants commute from their retreat. The name was Hestlewelle or Hesselwelle before 1897. A children's hospital opened in 1909. The Lower Village became a conservation area in 1979. Nine listed buildings lie near the centre and the Church of St Peter is Grade II*.
