A short history of Birkenhead

The name Birkenhead probably comes from Old English words for a headland overgrown with birch trees. In 1150 Benedictine monks led by Hamon de Mascy founded a priory and the Mersey ferry started running from the site. Edward I visited in 1275 and 1277 while Edward III extended the priory's rights by charter on 13 April 1330. The area stayed agricultural until steam ferries arrived, running to Tranmere from 1817 and Woodside from 1822. William Laird set up an ironworks in 1824 and shipbuilding began in 1829. An act of 1833 brought paving, lighting and a market. Many Irish refugees from the famine made their home there in the mid-1800s and friction with local Protestants produced the Garibaldi riots in 1862. A railway tunnel beneath the Mersey began service in 1886 and the Queensway road tunnel followed in 1934. Near the centre stand 206 listed buildings.
